How to make the most of a job fair
Before: read the organiser's page
Date, times, venue, whether you need a ticket, the list of employers attending: it is all on the organiser's page, which is the reference. Some events ask you to apply online before you come, others are free to walk into. Choose five to eight employers and read their vacancies.
On the day: three things to bring
- Several printed copies of your CV, one page, easy to read standing up.
- A thirty- to forty-five-second introduction: who you are, one achievement, what you are looking for with them.
- One question per stand, taken from the vacancy.
After: follow up within forty-eight hours
A three-sentence message to each person you met: where you met, what you talked about, your updated CV attached. Then apply for the roles you discussed, mentioning the conversation.
Job fair, recruitment day or careers fair: what is the difference?
A job fair brings many employers together, often with free entry. A recruitment day lines up short interviews, sometimes by appointment. A careers fair mixes recruitment, training and advice, and is often run by a university for its students and graduates. The CV you bring is the same; how you prepare your introduction changes.
Dates change often: this list is reviewed regularly, but only the organiser's page is authoritative.
